Cardiac Emergency/Medical Emergency Response Plan
Lincoln County Schools
1) The person who finds or observes someone with a medical emergency should call/or designate someone to call the main office to activate the CERT (cardiac emergency response team)/MERT (medical emergency response team). The person who found the individual should not leave the individual in order to ensure safety and relay eyewitness account of the event. If a cardiac event is suspected, have the secretary call 911 immediately while the CERT/MERT is on their way. Clear the room/area if needed. Note the time.
2) The secretary will page overhead for the CERT/MERT team to respond to an emergency in an exact location and notify 911 if needed. Secretary will also be responsible for getting a copy of the emergency form to provide to EMS as they direct EMS to the scene upon arrival.
3) Each team member will respond, carrying out their duties, such as bringing the AED, bringing the emergency bag, recording, notifying parent/guardian, or crowd control. Administrator will decide whether to place the school on a “HOLD” (which is holding students in the classroom while the emergency is managed and EMS is responding).
4) If the individual does not have a pulse, the first person should start CPR and proceed with the CERP (Cardiac Emergency Response Plan). If the team arrives and it is a medical emergency that is not cardiac related, proceed with assessment, first aid, and determine if 911 is needed.
5)When the AED arrives, it should be activated immediately. Attach the pads to the patient’s BARE chest, minimizing interruptions of compressions when placing AED pads to the bare chest. Follow commands from AED, AED will only deliver a shock if it is needed.
6) Continue CPR at 30 compressions (rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute) to 2 rescue breaths until patient is responsive or EMS arrives to take over, making sure to rotate persons doing compressions to avoid fatigue.
7) Once EMS arrives, transition care to them. The team should focus on assisting EMS as needed.
8) Debrief. Discuss the outcome of the emergency. Identify any issues affecting the efficiency of the team/response. Make sure to fill out the emergency response form. If your school nurse is not present, notify them of the event.
